mtv-16-and-pregnant

My sister and I often watch reality TV shows. We are suckers for any of these shows, especially those about families. Recently, there are re-runs of the MTV show 16 and Pregnant. We watched the story of Farrah. I think she’s the most popular among those teen pregnant moms. We’ve managed to watch three stories already. We don’t really know the exact time the show is on but we’re okay with that. I digress.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings about this show. First, the good feeling. I like the fact that MTV is showing how life has drastically changed for the teenage moms (and the guys who got them pregnant). Still in high school, it is not only embarrassing for them to tell everyone about their condition, it also changed their lifestyles. Morning sickness, growing baby bump, worries about finances and the future. A teen with half a brain would realize upon watching that when you get pregnant (or impregnated someone) and you are still a teen, life will turn for the difficult. Or worse for most. Not to mention that it will cause disappointment, hurt and too many problems, including strained relationships, with the parents. That Farrah story even has the man who impregnated her missing in action!

Now, on to the bad feeling. Kids are impressionable. Most are even drawn to the bad/negative/dark side. If they see something that they know will anger their parents, being the rebel kid and all, they might think of doing it. Just to annoy the hell out of those who care for them. Remember those teens who made a pact of getting themselves pregnant when they turn 16? You get my drift. Even with the harsh reality of a difficult life ahead for a teen mom or dad, they don’t care as long as they give in to what they think will make them happy. Plus the fact that MTV’s showing the teen preggy moms declaring how they couldn’t wait to see their kid or how the kid changed their lives for the better. Sure, a baby is a blessing. But they should also be reminded of the fact that the baby should not be subjected to a harsh/difficult life just because they can’t control their body urges.

Teens out there should not get angry with their parents for being mad at them, for showing their hurt and the betrayal they feel. What parent won’t get hurt when they heard about their teenage kid pregnant/has impregnated someone? Of course, they are thinking how their kid can make it through life. Still in school, not yet working, already with a kid. Life is not easy. Especially for a 16 and pregnant kid!

I wish MTV would put a disclaimer in the beginning and end of the show. It should remind teens to be careful, to consult their parents/guardians/someone from school and ask them about sex education and birth control. It’s good that a show like this is being shown. But it should also encourage a positive change and not just let teens interpret the show as they may.
